Sherry Martine MacKinnon
Artist Statement
I started working with metal mid-life with a desire to learn how to move metal with torch and hammer; an age-old alchemy turning base metals into wearable bits of magic. Nature and whimsical elements inspire my work which is made from Sterling silver, copper, and bronze and paired with native Michigan stones including Lake Superior agate, greenstone, mohawkite, native copper, and copper replacement agates. Some pieces include semi-precious cabochons and beads, and some enamel work.
Freelance Jewelry Artist | June 2021 – Present
Began by making beaded earrings and bracelets to sell until I earned enough money to purchase some equipment and set up a small studio.
Moved on to working with base metals (silver, copper, bronze, and brass) learning the basics of sawing, cutting, filing, stamping, finishing, and basic stone setting.
Incorporating metal forging techniques into my work using primitive tools. Exploring the use of enamel as color. Jewelry designs becoming more complex, organic, and original in nature.
